Senate Race in Georgia
The country is slated for two January 5th US Senate runoff elections in Georgia. These runoffs will decide which Party controls the Senate.
Current standings: Sen. Dan Sullivan R-AK is on track to win reelection safely. That puts Senate control at 49-48 in favor of the GOP.
Senate Race in North Carolina
Sen. Thom Tillis R-NC has not been declared the winner yet. According to NC officials, there are approximately 117,000 potential uncounted votes. This is the number of absentee ballots that were sent to voters who requested them but have not been returned. These ballots will only be counted if they are postmarked on or before Nov. 3 and physically received COB on Nov. 12. As a reference, GOP voters requested 1/3 of the ~177k ballots.
Sen. Tillis is currently ahead of Democrat Candidate Cal Cunningham by 96,688 votes. Given this, the mathematics suggest the Democrats have almost no chance of overcoming the lead.
Adding a Tillis win puts the Senate control to 50-48 in favor of the Republicans.
This means the Senate majority will be decided on Jan 5th. Should Democrats win both runoffs, the breakdown would be 50-50 and projected Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris would be the tie-breaking vote.
