WASHINGTON — American Bakers Association member facilities represent 43 of the 95 manufacturing plants recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR certification for their superior energy performance in 2019. Only plants in the top 25 percent of energy performance nationwide can earn the ENERGY STAR.
“Our members’ care deeply about sustainability initiatives,” said Rasma Zvaners, Vice President of Regulatory and Technical Services. “The ENERGY STAR program recognizes members of the baking industry who are dedicated to increasing energy efficiency and helping the environment.”
The ABA-Member facilities, along with the other plants representing 20 different types of manufacturing, reduced their energy bills by $520 million, saved more than 100 trillion British thermal units (TBtu) of energy, and achieved broad emissions reductions, including 6 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The energy savings are enough to meet the annual energy needs of nearly 670,000 American households.
ABA Member, Bimbo Bakeries, was recognized for the third consecutive year as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year thus receiving the Sustainable Excellence award for their leading corporate-wide energy management strategies, programs, and achievements.
ENERGY STAR Certified Baking Plants
A total of 43 member facilities were awarded the ENERGY STAR certification in 2019.
“The magnitude of these plants’ savings indicates that manufacturers in the United States have a lot to gain by investing in energy efficiency,” said Anne Idsal, EPA Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation. “Energy management is a win/win: saving money for manufacturers and protecting our environment.”
ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry
180 bakeries registered for the ENERGY STAR Challenge with 25 bakeries achieving the challenge reduction goal, voluntarily reducing their energy intensity by 10% in 5 years or less.
