Independent Contractors
The Logistics Professional Group, in conjunction with ABA’s newly-formed State Affairs Working Group, has worked to ensure bakers utilizing independent contractors will not face uncertainty with regard to whether their company could face worker misclassification lawsuits. On a federal level, this involves working with the Department of Labor (DoL) on creating clear definitions of employees.
DRIVE Safe Act
The DRIVE Safe Act is one of the biggest legislative efforts ABA has engaged with for the driver shortage issue. The bill would lower the interstate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) age from 21 to 18 pending implementation of certain truck safety features and a 400-hour probationary period. While some members may not be able to take advantage of these younger drivers directly, the industry would experience a decrease in pressure on the market for drivers.
At the Spring Logistics Conference, ABA gathered information about member top-line priorities and personal anecdotes on the driver shortage. With this critical insight, ABA can bring the stories and struggles of Bakers to key legislators to highlight the need for immediate action.
