It is no secret the manufacturing industry, including the wholesale baking industry, is facing a workforce recruitment and retention problem. According to a 2017 Gallup report, State of the American Workplace, manufacturing is the least engaged occupation in the United States with only 1 in 4 employees feeling engaged at work. Low employee engagement can lead to costly mistakes in the facility, costs of hiring new employees, and more.
Communication is Key
The study also reports, "Understanding why a company follows a particular process and ensuring that information is properly disseminated are crucial." That's why training programs that teach the art and science behind the manufacturing process can engage employees. When faced with challenges on the line, employees with proper background knowledge can make informed decisions that save time and money in the long run.
A Solution: Entry-Level Training
With ABA's Entry-Level Training, new employees can learn the fundamentals of baking. ELT is an on-line beginner program for new hires or department transfers who are new to the baking manufacturing process or those who simply want a refresher on the basics. There are four lessons covering the fundamentals: Ingredients, Mixing, Forming, and Baking. Students have six weeks to complete all four lessons, which are available in both English and Spanish. Upon successful completion of all four modules, students receive a Certificate of Completion. Not only will ELT provide a basic overview of the process, employees will better recognize the significance of each step and ingredients in baking.
In addition to Entry-Level Training, ABA has training for every level of experience. Intermediate Training (IT) is a six-week on-line course covering a specific product type and/or the equipment used to produce it. The Cookie & Cracker Manufacturing Course (CCMC) is an on-line, two-year advanced program that provides an in-depth technical understanding of the complete manufacturing process. These courses are perfect for engaging your employees at all skill and knowledge levels.
